Classic Cheeseburger
United States · North America
The American cheeseburger is a cultural icon — a thick, juicy beef patty topped with melted cheese, crisp lettuce, ripe tomato, onion, and condiments, all held between a toasted bun. Simple in concept but deeply satisfying, the perfect cheeseburger is all about quality beef, proper seasoning, and the right melt on the cheese.
Ingredients
- 600g ground beef (80% lean)
- 4 brioche burger buns
- 4 slices American cheddar cheese
- 4 leaves iceberg lettuce
- 2 large tomatoes, sliced
- 1 red onion, sliced into rings
- 4 tablespoons ketchup
- 4 tablespoons mayonnaise
- 2 tablespoons yellow mustard
- Salt and freshly cracked black pepper
- Butter for toasting the buns
- Dill pickles to serve
Instructions
- 1
Divide the ground beef into 4 equal portions. Gently shape each into a patty about 1.5 cm thick — do not overwork the meat.
- 2
Season both sides generously with salt and cracked black pepper just before cooking.
- 3
Heat a cast-iron pan or grill over high heat until very hot.
- 4
Cook the patties for 3–4 minutes per side without pressing them down (this squeezes out the juices).
- 5
Place a slice of cheese on each patty in the last minute of cooking. Cover briefly to melt.
- 6
Slice the buns and butter them. Toast on the grill or pan until golden.
- 7
Mix ketchup and mayonnaise for the burger sauce.
- 8
Assemble: spread sauce on both bun halves, then layer lettuce, tomato, patty with cheese, onion rings, and pickles.
- 9
Serve hot with fries or a side salad.
Chef's Tips
Never flatten the patty while cooking — those precious juices stay inside to keep it juicy. Use an 80/20 beef blend for the best flavour and texture.
